During the entire month of November, the Minnesota Zoo​ will be sharing stories of the many rescued and rehabilitated animals that we care for. All of our animals receive amazing care from zoo staff, volunteers and community members. All of this work is made possible because of YOUR amazing support – thank you! Between the Zoo’s Discovery Bay aquarium and Tropical Reef, you will notice three gorgeous sea turtles usually swimming around or resting near the sandy floor. All three, two green sea turtles and one Kemps-Ridley sea turtle, were injured due to collisions with boats in the wild where they sustained injuries to their shells. Our Kemps-Ridley also sustained injuries to its head. Due to these injuries, all three would not survive in the wild so they have made their home at the Minnesota Zoo. They serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts and help the Zoo connect people, animals and the natural world to save wildlife.

During the warm summer months, the Zoo’s aquarists actually bring these sea turtles, one-by-one, outside so they are able to absorb the natural sunlight, which is very helpful to their overall health. You may just spot them in our Central Plaza on warm days.

Did you Know? Unlike most sea turtles, adult green turtles are herbivorous, feeding on sea grasses and algae. Juvenile green turtles, however, will also eat invertebrates like crabs, jellyfish, and sponges.
